The eclipse comes to Spain
On August 12, 2026, the moon's shadow crosses mainland Spain for the first time since 1912. It arrives from the Atlantic in the northwest, sweeps across the country in minutes, and lifts off the Earth at sunset over the Mediterranean. Totality is brief, and the eclipsed sun hangs remarkably low in the western sky. The same geometry that makes this eclipse demanding also makes it dramatic: an elongated shadow, and an unusually intense darkness.

Spain is the most accessible place on Earth to see this eclipse, with about 40 percent of the country inside the path of totality across the north and center. But the sun's height above the horizon changes everything about where to stand. It sits about 12 degrees up in the northwest, sinks to 4 degrees on the Mediterranean coast, and barely clears 2 degrees from the Balearic Islands. At those heights a hill, a building or a line of trees can hide the entire show, so every decision in this guide flows from one requirement: a clean view to the west.
Where to watch
Twenty-one spots, grouped west to east. The farther west you stand, the higher the sun and the more forgiving the geometry. Every one of these places still demands an open western horizon, so before committing, check the sight line from your exact spot with the sun position map. And be careful scouting from above: a park that looks ideal on satellite imagery can turn out to be heavily tree-lined and useless for an eclipse this low.

Getting there and getting around
The path of totality crosses varied terrain, from the Atlantic coast of Galicia across the inland plateau of Castilla y León and Aragón to the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands, where much of Europe takes its August holiday. Flying into Madrid or Barcelona will make sense for many visitors, but note what the path does around them.
Once you are in the north, moving around is relatively easy. Spain's motorway network and high-speed rail cover the broad northern plateau quickly, and several cities inside the path, including A Coruña, Oviedo, Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia, will absorb large numbers of visitors. Because totality falls shortly before sunset, you have most of the day to watch forecasts and reposition. A car gives you the most flexibility to chase clear sky and an open horizon.

Weather and climate
Historical cloud data suggests generally favourable conditions across much of Spain in August, particularly on the interior plateau, where regions like Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha run dry and stable in summer. According to Eclipsophile, some of the best statistical prospects on the entire eclipse track lie across the Meseta Central and the Ebro basin around Zaragoza. Even so, the eclipse comes late in the day, local cloud can develop through the afternoon, and mobility remains your best insurance.
The Balearic Islands are their own paradox: statistically among the best chances of clear skies anywhere on the path, yet the most fragile view. With the sun only a few degrees up, haze layers or thin marine cloud far out over the Mediterranean can obscure the eclipsed sun even on an otherwise cloudless evening.
Eclipse day
The shadow crosses Spain in the final minutes of the day, northwest to east, shortly before sunset. Times shift with location, so treat this as the shape of the evening rather than your personal schedule.

Very Low to Low Sun
The Sun across this area ranges from close to the horizon, where even small obstructions can matter to low in the sky, where trees, buildings, and hills can affect the view.
The next shadows
Spain's eclipse era is only beginning. A second total solar eclipse crosses the country in 2027, and an annular eclipse follows in 2028. Stand in the shadow this August, and you will understand why people plan their lives around the next one.
